Thanks for this post Brian!
To be honest I was amongst those that would just re-deal regardless, in fact it would be done at most of the home games I attend. Usually we'd just take back the chips that we're down but this can, as you said get a bit tricky when its a lot of players, so I think for those cases I'm going to refer to the above rule from now on instead of wasting a lot of time.

It's not necessary for casinos to make money out of misdeals as the most of them make enough profits from tournament fees and ads put on the tables and where-so-ever you can imagine. That is why I don't think this has something to do with the casino hiding something in order to win more, rather than it's really a misunderstanding/misdeal.

You are correct that casinos will not often declare a misdeal, but remember that a casino only deals the game to MAKE MONEY. The more hands that are dealt, the more money they make. They often bend the rules for maximum profitability. They could care less about your individual hand.

The hand should only be a misdeal if it is the first card off the deck exposed or more than one card is exposed, otherwise the card should be replaced with the burn card and the exposed card is now the burn card. I have played in many casinos and this is how they always handle it.

It seems you blog is indeed a source of new poker know how for me. As I mostly play online poker tournaments and play online I have never thought about misdeals in real live table poker. There are so many different things to think about. Thanks for this misdealing blog post as I surely make sure in my live table play to not getting into any trouble by ignoring the misdeal implications.
